The ten acres at 246 Grand View can be broken down into the
greenhouse, the edible garden, the formal garden, the arboretum,
the pasture and everything else. The first three are inside the
deer-proof half acre close to the house. The last three are
outside the deer fence and comprise the other nine and a half
acres.
The Greenhouse is attached to the basement level of the south
side of the house and makes use of the deck as a roof. Because of
its southern exposure and slant, it receives the direct rays of
the sun in the winter. There is no provision for heating the
greenhouse and it is not unusual for the temperature, on a clear
winter day, to reach eighty degrees. Because of this there is a
temperatu
re
controlled exhaust fan that keeps the heat buildup from killing
the plants inside, especially in the fall and spring. This makes for a semi tropical climate
in the greenhouse used to protect potted roses, lemon and lime
trees, ferns, camellias, rosemary, chili peppers, lettuce, and a
jasmine plant. All of these plants are moved out into the garden
during the growing season. The greenhouse also serves as a
passive heat source, warming the south basement wall and windows.
On a clear day in the winter you can open the basement windows
and heat the basement. You can also see the flowering plants,
especially the camellias, from inside in the winter.
The Edible Garden near the greenhouse on the south side of the house is a row of
three Asian pear trees that produce delicious fruit in late
summer. There is a persimmon tree that also produces wonderful
fruit. There are raspberries and a row of asparagus. There are
two raised beds for growing vegetables.
The
Formal Garden faces the western, or "sunset", side of the
house. It is formal only in the sense that it has "bones" in the form
of hardscape, water features, paths, gates, pergolas and framed
views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. About two thirds of the planting beds are
filled with perennials and shrubs. The other third is planted with annuals, many of them self
seeding. There is a progression of spring, summer, and fall
flowers for continual season bloom and color interest.
The Arboretum outside the deer fence includes an extraordinary number and variety of trees. Many of them
are flowering and put on a breathtaking spring show. There are
peach trees, red buds, dogwoods, crab apples, and a magnificent
flowering cherry. There is also an enormous specimen black ash, a grove of giant
tulip poplars, and numerous Japanese maples. There are locust,
mountain ash, hackberry, wild cherry, and a deciduous magnolia.
Evergreens include eastern red cedars, Virginia pines, white pines, and
spruces. The residue of the property is in second growth forest
which requires little maintenance.
