Imagine the serenity of a Zen inspired retreat melded with a sense of quiet luxury at every turn, and you have a fairly good idea of what awaits you at Keyser Run Retreat.  This deceptively simple house in the woods has a wonderful presence both indoors and out.

Residence

Conceived as a quiet and calming weekend retreat for a busy DC professional couple, this house on the Keyser Run achieves its goal spectacularly.  The outstanding design by noted architect Michael Holt perfectly captures the subtle interplay of luxurious comfort and natural simplicity.   A muted color palette and natural elements of stone and wood are combined with urbane sophistication to bring the outdoors inside as much as possible.

The great room  is the central focus of the house and provides most of the interior living space.  Kitchen and dining areas as well as living and seating areas flow seamlessly from one end of the room to the other.   Bedrooms are located at one end of the house for greater privacy.

Main Floor:

  • Entry Hall/Foyer (12x12) - the slate tile flooring, subtle woodwork, and beautifully designed staircase set the tone for the rest of the residence.

  • Great Room (35 x 26) - The main living space features kitchen, dining, seating, and entertainment areas.  A soaring stone fireplace is the focal point of the living area.  Oak flooring, bleached wooden beams, a wall of windows and low voltage lighting and a built-in sound system make the space airy, open, and understated.

  • Kitchen (13 x 15) - The section of the great room given over to the kitchen is a true chef's delight.  Enormous granite counters space, accessible shelving, high-end appliances and more help create a great spot for group food preparation, and a terrific informal eating area and beautiful buffet space for larger gatherings.

  • Screened Porch (20 x 13) - This is a good sized exterior room off the great room designed for summer living with space for seating and dining areas overlooking the nearby stream.

  • Library Bedroom (16 x 16) -  A quiet room overlooking a stream.  Designed as a bedroom with an office nook, it functions beautifully as a library.

  • Guest Bedroom (14 x 12) - A downstairs bedroom with an en-suite bath and windows facing east.

  • Master Bedroom (12 x 15) - Cleverly concealed closets, subtle sisal-wool berber weave carpeting, and bedside shelving nooks make this a serene retreat from the world.

  • Master Bath (10 x 10) - Large sunny room with oversized soaking tub, glass shower, and double vanity.

  • Laundry/Mud Room (6 x 12)  - Washer and dryer and plenty of storage space between kitchen and back entrance.

Grounds

Keyser Run Retreat is very private and respectful of the natural surroundings.  Landscaping has purposefully been kept to a minimum to afford a better integration of natural elements into this property.  The house is located at the confluence of two small streams where plantings merge seamlessly with the native woodland.   Trails  radiate out from the house and parking area and are designed for hiking and horseback riding.  The meadow is a large open space that is ideal for family games, picnics, or quiet contemplation.   The bulk of the property is wooded and includes low lying areas with streams, rolling hillsides, and higher land on the western slope of Keyser Mountain.   There are outstanding view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah National Park from almost anywhere on the property.   The Little Devils' Staircase hiking trail can be accessed just a short distance from the property.
